The Championship kicks off on Friday, November 11th, 2016 with practice rounds on the course. Day 1 first round tee-off starts 6:30am on Saturday, November 12th, 2016. Other activities on the day are the professional coaching clinic, and "Longest Drive Beat The Pro Challenge” competition. Day 2 on Sunday, November 13th 2016 starts with guest players being invited to participate in the tournament followed by the final round of the Championship.
The interactive sessions at the professional coaching clinic, and the “Closet-To-The-Pin Beat The Pro Challenge” competition will also continue to take place. The grand finale and awards dinner with take place in the evening, capping off the Championship. As the premiere amateur championship, the Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship has enhanced the brand of the Bank as a major driver of golf sponsorships in Nigeria.
The Championship, which made its debut 54 years ago, has also sired professional golfers like Sunday Okpe, Willy Gift, Oche Odoh and I. Ocheje among others. Samuel Amadi and J. Ajiboye hold the record title of highest winners of the Champion Trophy, with five trophies each. While Ajiboye won in 1969, 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1979; Amadi won the trophy in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2007 and 2010, while in 2014 and 2015, Monday Eze and Uche Eze won the coveted title respectively.
In the last five years, FirstBank has brought in two European PGA Professional Players from the United Kingdom who coordinate the coaching clinic for special guests, spectators and children.
